The following report was sent to the American Bigfoot Society, and forwarded onto Bart Cutino and Robert Leiterman of the BFRO. The American Bigfoot Society would like to thank both Bart and Robert for their hard work and in depth investigation of this report.
Date contacted witness: Contacted by telephone: Tuesday-February 2nd 2010
Met in person at the scene for video interview: Thursday-February 18th 2010
Witness name: Kim Rollins, Brookings Oregon
Type B – Vocalization
Number in party: Single
County: Humboldt County - CA
Nearest Town: Klamath
Nearest Road: Coastal Drive
Time of incident: Noon
Date of incident: January 11th 2010
Day of the week: Monday
Weather: Overcast – light rain
Other: Unusually Quiet – light vehicle traffic
Witness actions: Parked vehicle on shoulder of road (turn out). The witness urinated by side of road prior to vocalizations.
Note: A pattern the witness had repeated once to twice a month for the last nine or so years without incident.
Vocalization pattern and location : Based on the pattern I’ve broken them down into two separate series.
First: The reported 12 screams over a minute and half in duration were broken down as follows:
The 12 reported screams (similar to the Klamath Screams recording but without the knocking.) were reported to last approximately two to three seconds in duration with approximately three to five seconds break in between the next. He stated that the screams/calls sounded garbled like the caller had rocks in its mouth. He said there were similarities to an open mouth bear growl.
Note: Based on witness statement, the screams were evenly spaced in duration and frequency but had changed in pitch and loudness (quieter/muffled) as if the subject making them had turned away a few of the times (possibly directing the scream in another direction) as it approached his location. The witness estimated that the first screams (east of his location) sounded as if they were coming from approximately ½ a mile away. The witness also reported that the sounds had a reverberating “ringing” vs. the reverberating echo that others normally refer to in similar reports. He said there wasn’t any echo, that the forest had absorbed the sound. (The effect of sound being absorbed by the surrounding forest and moisture in the air as it fades away.)
Second: The reported louder, closer single scream lasted approximately five seconds and then abruptly ended. It was reported as follows:
Starts within five seconds as the last of the twelve screams faded away (description above) he heard a single exceptionally loud “howling” scream that lasted five seconds coming from approximately 100 yards up the forested slope above him. Witness said it had similarities to a far off train whistle. The witness stated that it was the last scream that sent him on his way in a hurry.
Scene/Topography: Protected old growth coastal redwood environment. A dirt turnout on the north shoulder of Coastal Drive within the boundaries of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The location is overshadowed by a heavily forested hillside to the south (location of final call/scream), brushy embankment lined with forest to the north and the intersection of Coastal Drive and Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway to the east (approximate direction of the series of 12 calls/screams).
Elevation: Approximately 740 feet above sea level.
Nearest points of interest: Closest campground to the south is approximately seven miles. Closest town is approximately four miles to the north. Trailheads approximately .8 of a mile to the west and .7 of a mile to south east. Highway 101 (major roadway) is ¾ of a mile to the east.
Witness background: Lived in the area for more than 30 years. He had been frequenting that location, one to two times a month for more than nine years alternating between 1200 hours and 0200 hours without incident. Though he had been conducts the same behavior every time he visits the above described location, this was the first time he has experienced the vocalizations. He is familiar with local flora and fauna and has an interest in the Bigfoot phenomena. He described himself a believer in the phenomena.
Witness statement: On Tuesday, February 2nd 2010 at approximately 2050 hours, I contacted Kim Rollins at his residence by phone. A summary of his February 2nd 2010 phone interview is as follows:
On Monday, January 11th 2010 at approximately 1200 hours, Rollins slid his vehicle around in the mud at the intersection of Coastal Drive and Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, before he drove the hundred or so yards to a turnout on the shoulder of Coastal Drive. There he stopped to relieve himself at the very same tree that he had visited for the last nine years.
It was during his urination break that he heard what he described as unusual vocalizations coming from the south and southeast of his location. He stated that he listened to them for approximately a minute and a half before he abruptly left the area in a hurry.
Based on the series of calls that he heard that afternoon, he believed that the calls were coming from two separate directions and that there might have been two parties involved. (See details of Vocalization pattern and location above)
He had also stated that he believed that whatever was making the series of 12 calls/screams, had been moving in his direction because they were getting progressively louder. He also believed that whatever was making the calls/screams was vocalizing in different directions as it moved. He described the actions as those one would use if someone were trying to find someone. He also believed that what ever was making the calls/screams couldn’t have made it to the hillside above him that quickly.
Rollins estimated that the last call/scream came from behind a large tree about mid slope up the hill, approximately 100 yards above him. That the single scream was exceptionally loud and intimidating and that he believed it was meant to scare him away. A call that he described as “Let’s make the human run” scream that sent him scurrying back to his vehicle and down the roadway.
I asked Rollins how he knew that there were exactly 12 calls, he said that he naturally counts. He had also stated that the calls/screams that he heard were very similar to the Klamath Scream recordings (that were recorded nearby Klamath in 1993-check it out on the Oregon Bigfoot site under Klamath Scream) that a friend had sent him about a year ago. Rollins admits to having been a Bigfoot believer prior to his January 11th 2010 incident.
When I asked Rollins if he could have misidentified the calls of other known animals in the area like bears, birds, mountain lions, Roosevelt elk, etc. he stated no. He was very familiar with the local wildlife, that he had grown up in the area and lived there for more than 30 years. That what he heard was “no cat or coyote”.
Though Rollins lives in southern Oregon, he still frequents the area because of his scheduled doctor visits to the south.
Rollins stated that he posted his encounter on several Bigfoot websites immediately after his encounter while it was still fresh in his mind.
Follow up:
During the end of January 2010, I received a telephone call from Bart Cutino asking me as a favor, to contact Melissa Hovey from the American Bigfoot Society out of Ohio about a local Bigfoot related report they needed someone locally to follow up on.
On Tuesday, February 2nd 2010, I called Melissa Hovey about the report. She gave me the contact information for a Kim Rollins out of Brookings, Oregon.
On Tuesday, February 2nd 2010 at approximately 2050 hours, I contacted Kim Rollins at his residence by phone. (See above)
On Thursday, February 18th 2010, at approximately noon, Bart Cutino and I met up with Kim Rollins at the intersection of HWY 101 and Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway (approximately 1 mile away from where his incident occurred). After a quick introduction, we followed Rollins to the location of his alleged vocalization. Rollins gave us permission to video tape his interview which we intend to make available with the report.
Rollins described his encounter much like he had done over the telephone. During the confirmation process while re-contacting the witness on February 27th 2010, he assured me that the 12 calls/screams were in two to three second bursts with five second silent intervals in between. He admitted that his memory of the last call/scream, the one that came from 100 yards up the hill above him, wasn’t as clear and organized as he would like. He hurried into his vehicle to get out of there. He stated that there could have been more calls/screams, but he didn’t remember in the confusion. You can’t blame him for that.
It was obvious to both Bart and myself that he had given the Bigfoot subject matter some thought. During the interview, he shared some of his Bigfoot knowledge and understanding with us. When I asked him about the vocalizations he heard, he said they most reminded him of the Klamath Scream recordings. What is interesting is that the Klamath screams were recorded not more than five miles to the north as the raven flies. Those screams are something else, a mix between a howler monkey and something else you probably wouldn’t want to meet up with alone in the dark.
I was in the park on January 29th and 30th 2010, approximately seven miles to the south and heard a couple of elk bugling back and forth to each other. The area has a healthy elk population. During the interview process, Rollins made it clear that what he heard wasn’t elk or for that matter coyotes (partial sound comparison on the video). Some people believe that the Klamath Scream recording might have been coyotes. The debate goes on.
I stood next to Rollins on the road below and had Bart climb the hillside and stand in the approximate location where Rollins believed the last calls/screams came from. On my command, Bart gave out a loud whoop. Rollins had described the volume of Bart’s call being similar in loudness to the ones he had heard in the distance (12 calls to the south east). He stated that the call he had heard coming from the hillside above him that afternoon was several times louder and very intimidating. That whatever had made them had to have an incredible lung capacity.
After releasing the witness, both Bart and I ventured up slope towards the top of the ridge to have a look around. We found an unofficial human trail winding its way up the ridge. We found abundant human sign, downed logs that had been chain sawed out of the way several months before (no sawdust found). Along the way we found that ferns had been recently pulled up from the ground and fern fronds torn off from their stalks and piled in places. Loose debris and soil had been dislodged by the recent heavy rains leaving no detectable tracks. It had been 39 days since Rollins had lastexperienced the vocalizations. It is very difficult to tie in what we found to the situation that Rollins described. As far as we could tell, the disturbance that we found could have been from fern poachers who frequent the park areas looking for a quick buck.
Hearing reports from Bigfoot related encounters is nothing new to this geographic area of the coast redwoods. The location is just south of the Klamath River. The native peoples of the Yurok, Hoopa and Talowa Nations have spoken of similar encounters for years. The BFRO and other Bigfoot databases are filled with reports from this geographic part of the state. Participants on several of the BFRO’s Redwoods Expeditions have reported both Class A’s and B’s from the area. Scott Herriott’s Video footage was obtained nearby. The Monster Quests episode of Legend of the Hairy Man was filmed within five miles as the Raven flies of Rollins’ class B vocalization report. Needles to say, this area has a considerable history related to the Bigfoot phenomena.
End Report.
